It has been really a while that I didn't put anything on this blog - ever since the commencement of my work three and a half months ago.. Life has turned to be hectic since then and it still is.

One important reason for which i didn't update this blog is because my job as journalist is basically about writing.. I write a lot in English in the office and thus I want a break from that when I come back home.. I do update my French blog though as I have to keep my French level from deteriorating - I don't have much chance to speak French nowadays.

In addition to that, the readership of this blog is not very exciting.. Ultimately i am using a French host site to run a weblog in English, so nobody is to blame..

Nevertheless, I have finally decided to revive this zombie space.. The reason being is I want to express myself - lost, perplexed and melancholic young Chinese who wants to simply embrace different cultures but finds himself trapped in this dull land called Palau Singapura..

Yes, it's the new era for this blog.. and I will always try to keep the morale... life ought to be beautiful.. it's our moral obligation to make this happen..

I was on the aircraft leaving Shanghai for Singapore on the evening of this festival of family reunions - The Mid-Autumn Festival. Usually the family should be reunited to enjoy the scenery with full moon while tasting moon-cakes.
I was a bit sad since I have not spent this festival with my family for 6 years, and this time i was so close to that but the weird Airliner's policy disallowed me to pass one more day in China. Anyway, it was conforted since I was closer to the moon than those who saw it from the ground... May I was just finding excuses to confort myself.. Nevertheless, the stewardesses dressed in traditional costume of Tang Dynasty for the occasion gave us somehow a warm feeling.

A bit sad since lots of Chinese now only know this festival as an occasion of mooncake businesses.. There are much more values and tradition which lie behind... we can't lose them, our ancestors didn't give us the right to lose our heritage...

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival to all Chinese and Eas-Asians who can or cannot spend this festival with a family reunion.

P.S. I am sorting the keywords that I have noted down while observing the new development and trend of my homeland during this one-month trip. I will publish them on this blog soon. I will have to delay the publication of Viet-man journal since the digital photos haven't been available yet.

October 1st, 1949, Mao Zedong announced the creation of the People's Republic of China. Since then, this day has become the National Day of the most populated country in the world, and one of the most celebrated festival on the vast land of this country and in the heart of the Chinese nationals who live overseas. A rich and developped homeland gives us, those who live in foreign lands, a strong sentiment of confidence and patriotism.

Recently, in order to promote tourism and domestic consumption, the Chinese government adopted the "Golden Week" policy, which gives the Chinese three weeks of holidays each year, which take place around Chinese New Year, The Labour Day and The National Day. Since the National Day "Golden Week" lies in autumn, the pleasant climate makes travel easier and more comfortable. In particular, the Mid-Autumn Festival lies within this week as well this year: the festival marks the family reunion which is absolutely vital in Chinese philosophy.  Thus the people who work outside their hometown are more likely to travel back to reunite with their family.

This year, a prevision gives a figure of 334 million which is the estimated number of travellers on the roads all across China during this "Golden Week". Although the overloaded transport system is bothering people, the reunions are always pleasant and full of happiness.

It's the first time in 6 years that I celebrate this festival in my homeland. I am so content for having this great opportunity.

And I wish, to all the Chinese, a happy national day!!

Vive la Chine!

I have just watched the documentary series "China Rises" produced by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in colaboration with the journalists of The New York Times, France 5, ZDF of Germany, Discovery and S4C of the UK. An attemp to understand and the present to the western the nowadays China which is undergoing a dramatic transformation.

China Rises is divied into 4 parts to cover the major issues about the contemporary China: the 2008 Olympic games which will be held in Beijing -- a gamble of the party, becoming rich, the food and Shanghai -- City of dreams... the series presents to us a panorama with the rich and the poor, the miracles and the potential crises. I have seen various documentaries attempting to understand China during the last few years, and this one from CBC is one of the most complete and updated ones.

The first episode starts by  the announcement of Beijing as a host city  of the 2008  Olympic Games, with thousands of Chinese folks crowded in the streets of Beijing celebrating their victory, with the five-star red flags flying.. We can hardly see the Chinese going out for celebrations, especially after the incident in 1989. But at this moment, the nationalism and the patriotism was dominating.... Yes, with years of capitalist reform and two decades of formidable economic development, the Chinese people have their right of being confident of themselves and of their country..

However, in a country with such a big population, the society in transformation stays volatile. The government had not managed to prevent the anti-Japanese demonstrations from happening in 2005.. Even now we still don't know who the organisers of these events are. The Internet makes it very difficult to control the rumours ... Often the Westerners can't understand the attempts of the Chinese government to regulate the Internet.. I myself believe that it's because of the fact that Chinese don't have a tradition of investigating sth before believing that, thus the rumours circulate faster and more easily, they cause social unrest and turbulances from time to time... What bothers me is the manner that the government handles these issues, which is not transparent at all.. The prosecute cyber-dissidents instead of the gossip-makers who pose more threat to the society.. Leaving those dissidents speak freely is more efficient than covering the truth... The absence of the truth breeds the rumours..

The migrant workers from the countryside to the big cities, the laid-off workers from state-run enterprises, the poor peasants repelled from their land.. the new formidable castles, the luxurious boutiques, the extravagant life of the nouveau-riches... The different is so vast that the society has turned to be volatile... Millions of Chinese have the sentiment of being left behind and betrayed by their leaders and some of them even have the willingness to return the the totalitarian communist era of Mao, in that epoch at least everybody was guaranteed a work and medical insurance was paid by the state... With the new government of Hu-Wen, we have witnessed that Beijing is trying to listen to these groups infavored by the reform, and some measures have been put into place to resolve the issues... However, China is such a vast country that the realisation of these measures hase become extremely difficult, in particular when the local authorities defy the orders from Beijing... We don't know yet how things will turn out eventually, we will see, with good wishes...

And the development is making more and more ploughable land into commercial and industrial usage... which means less and less land for farming and agriculture.. with a population of 1.3billion, any turbulance about food will become eventually national disaster.. Feeding this population has been the priority of every single government in the entire history of this nation, and it continues to be so...

By now, I have talked mostly about the problems, rather than successes.. Yes, the miracles need not to be told since they are physically there for you to witness... but the problems, if not properly addressed, could become really menaces to the nation and thus to the world...

Buy the DVDs of China Rises, I assure that you are going to like this series.

The nature

I went out jogging this evening, after finding out that it was really not sure spending all my time looking for a job.

I am living now in a condominium just next to a rive (yes it's a real river) which goes through the north-east of Singapore. On the other bank there is a forest, i don't know the area of the forest but it's really colorful and picturesque: the leaves, the flowers, the fruits.... Behind that there is an airbase i guess. The fighters make lots of noise, nevertheless sometimes we can see interesting things.. like last Friday I saw a parachuting exercise from just the window of my room. It was really pleasant seeing the chutes in the sky...

Since I went out in the evening, normally there is nothing interesting to see on the river or the forest, in contrary sometimes it's a bit scary, especially when i am jogging towards the north where i could find nobody and the lights don't work well sometimes.

So this time I decided to run towards the south.

While getting out of the estate, I saw some ripples in the river and there were some small white things jumping out of the water and falling back again. Were those fish? The fish were jumping? I was not sure.. But yes, it could only be fish.  Really a lot of them, it was immense, it was enormous...  They move slowly towards the south along the river... So was I... I was really glad accompanying them and being a witness of this natural phenomenon.

Soon the jogging route became narrow, the river as well... and the water started to stink.. I have known immediately that it was the city which was approaching me...

Lots of cars were circulating on the roads nearby... the people inside didn't know there was an enormous mouvement happening in the water next to them... Maybe they didn't need to know.. Their life, it's of business, of money and so on...

In Singqporem although the government has made lots of effort towards the conservation of the nature through the parks, natural reserves etc... Nevertheless, the Nature preserved is no longer Natural... Since we can't see how nature develops, how the species evolute... What we could see are only isolated small places, which give an illusion that there is still nature here. (I went to Bukit Timah (Lead Mountain) a couple of days ago with MM, DH and ZM. I didn't feel pleasant about the reserve since anyway it was just a small place totally submerged in the city and we could see nothing but weekend trekkers). This is not the nature that i would perceive.

I decided to come back and not to jog towards the south anymore. It was then I saw an legion of ants marching on the concrete pavement... more than 10 metres long and it was really enormous... They were marching, without knowing about the concrete pavement and they didn't need to know. when the environment changes, they adapt themselves towards the change.. simply... without asking why this change has happened and why the road they had been walking on for years doesn't exist anymore... They don't try to ask for a reason of being in this world...

But we, the human beings, do. We are always looking for a reason.  perhaps that's why our life becomes complicated and sometimes miserable.. Nevertheless we still dedicate our time to this endless search... Since we are the most intelligent beings on this planet, we have the right to know the reason for being.

When i was finally reaching my estate, the water nearby had always calmed. I could see no more fish jumping. Suddently, a bird, a beautiful bird, all white, with long beak, flying out of the water, leaving the ripples spreading.. It was flying, it was singing...

How nice it was!!

Friends of the past

I took a nap before dinner.. and I had this dream:
"I was aroused finding out that there were lots of people in my flat... i was astonished since lots of them were once my close friends, with whom I don't keep contacts anymore... LJ, a guy whom I did visit once every two weeks when i was in my first year of the university... CXD, the guy with whom i played Chinese chess almost daily, when i was in junior high school... WXF, one of my best friends in primary school, we always went out during weekends and were wild and crazy playing in the countryside..
i don't have contact with any of them... I don't know why but it is the truth.. LL proposed once her theory of "Friends of the past".. I agree to this.. As the time passes, the people change... Of my best friends, some of them will become "Friends of the past" eventually.. and the others will be lifelong friends...
So which type of friends will you be?
